Multiple factors build a strong case for outsourcing of analytical services: Companies are finding that in-house labs are not cost effective. In particular, cycles of high and low demand for tests create inefficient use of resources. Additionally, the inability to routinely utilize all analytical instrumentation 24/7 leads to higher fixed asset costs. Companies need to receive data quickly and accurately, often from multiple, even global locations. The growing sophistication in materials science and engineering is creating new materials that in turn are requiring more sophisticated performance testing. In addition, there is a proliferation of standards and regulatory specifications companies must meet. There is increasing sophistication in lab methods and certification that is intensifying the need for staff recruitment and training. Hand-in-hand with this trend is tremendous growth in lab instrumentation and the capital and training expense necessary to keep an in-house lab up-to-date. |
